Instead of using plain water, you should mist dry, delicate facial skin with a
nutrient-rich moisturizer. Ordinary water simply evaporates on the skin surface,
which can intensify the dryness. You can still mist with water, just follow each
spray with a healthy dose of moisturizer, preferably one with emollients like
Vitamin E.
If your skin is oily, sensitive, or prone to breakouts, do away with bar soaps and
bar cleansers. Instead, look for cleansers that are dispensed in pump or spray
bottles. The moist, exposed surface of bar soaps, combined with the humidity of
an enclosed bathroom, encourages the growth of acne-causing bacteria.
Avoid fragrances in your skin care products. Many products contain all sorts of
chemicals that companies do not have to disclose due to loopholes in laws
governing cosmetics. Fragrances are not required to declare their ingredients,
and therefore can have any number of toxic chemical mixtures within their
formula.
If you want baby-soft skin, it is important to exfoliate the skin to better prepare it
for moisturizer. You need to apply exfoliator to wet skin and work from your
shoulders down. Gently rub in circular motions to remove the dead skin, and pay
close attention to your knees, elbows and heels. Rinse everything off, and then
apply moisturizer. This should be done once or twice per week.
When shopping for sunblocks, look for products that contain titanium dioxide or
zinc oxide, as these two ingredients form a physical barrier and not just a
chemical one. Also, be aware of the differences in coverage implied by the
different SPF ratings. Even an SPF 50 product blocks only 98% of UV rays; in
other words, no product blocks absolutely everything.
As with any other ailment, if your skin begins to show drastic and unhealthy
changes, you should consult a dermatologist as soon as possible. Many people
do not take skin issues seriously and may end up causing more damage by
applying self diagnosed treatment or delaying medical care.
