It is the set of hardware and software designed to perform tasks that involve
the automatic processing of information.
I) What is a computer system?
Application programs are developed to respond to specific user needs, while
system programs control the operation of the various components of the
computer.
It consist of: Hardware
•The processor(s)
•The main memory
•The input/output peripherals (disks,
printers, network connection, …)
Software •System programs
•Application programs
II) What is an operating system (OS)?
A program that manages the computer
hardware.
It provides a basis for application
programs.
It acts as an intermediary between computer
user and computer hardware.
It is software designed to control and coordinate the various components
of a computer (or telephone) and to facilitate its use by a human being.
