Grammaire: Module 5: Mes Choses
Le Verbe avoir-to have
Telling what you and others have
Person
1st person
2nd person
3rd person
Singular
J’ai
Tu as
Il/elle/on a
I have
You have
He/she/it has
Plural
Nous avons
Vous avez
Ils/elles ont
we have
you have
they have
Using Avoir with Ne Pas: When we make the forms of avoir negative, since all forms begin with a vowel, we will
begin the negation with "n'":
Ex:
Tu n'as pas de frères.
Je n'ai pas de stylo.
Ils n'ont pas de vélo.
Important: If the sentence is negative, we will use "de" instead of "un", "des," or any other form. We cannot have
anything but "de" or "d' " after "pas."
Expressions that use Avoir instead of être : In English we use the verb: to be for these phrases, but in French we
use the verb: to have.
Ex: English I am hungry. French J’ai faim: (I have hunger.)
I am 14 years old. French: J’ai 14 ans (I have 14 years.)
Phrases that use avoir:
Avoir faim = to be hungry (J'ai faim.)
Avoir soif = to be thirsty (Tu as soif.)
Avoir peur = to be afraid (Il a peur.)
Avoir sommeil = to be sleepy (Elle a sommeil.)
Avoir chaud = to be hot (Nous avons chaud.)
Avoir froid = to be cold Vous avez froid. (You are cold.)
Avoir de la chance= to be lucky Tu as de la chance !
(You are lucky !)
Avoir raison = to be right (Ils ont raison.)
Avoir tort = to be wrong (Elles ont tort.)
Expressions of age (J'ai seize ans.) = I'm sixteen.
"Il y a" and "voilà" both mean there is/there are in English.
Use "il y a" to mean that something exists or is present: Il y a une chemise dans la boîte.
Use "voilà" to point things out.: Voilà la chemise de Jean dans la boîte.
Les Couleurs
Since these are adjectives, remember that they have to agree in gender and in number with the nouns they
describe. Look at these examples: Le used with a masculine word la is used with a femine word.
Le drapeau français est bleu, blanc et rouge.
La bicyclette est bleue, blanche et rouge.
Le stylo est vert.
La craie est verte.
Le cahier est violet.
La robe est violette.
Also keep in mind that adjectives may be made plural if the noun they describe is plural.
Example: Les garçons portent des chemises blanches.
Another thing to keep in mind is that in French most adjectives come after the noun.
Example: Le garçon porte une chemise blanche et grise.
