Course description: (4 units):
Strengthening of the 4 language skills already practiced in Level 1 – speaking, reading, writing and listening.
Emphasis is on communication in the language with special attention given to speaking and written skills
development. This course requires practice with audio-CDs outside of regular class time.
Credits are transferable: UC, CSU and private colleges.
Focus on:






Review of grammar principles and development of new points
Review tenses studied in Level 1 and learn all other major ones
Speaking skill development in pair activities and presentations
Listening practice from textbook CDs, movies and internet
Cultural awareness from music, movies, books and articles
Strengthening vocabulary and idiom bases
French B2 Student Learning Outcomes:




Strengthen French grammar foundation to communicate with more ease orally and in writing
Diversity awareness by understanding other cultures through readings and documentaries
Acquire a language base for practical purposes and intellectual enrichment
Be able to write short paragraphs on various cultural topics
Textbooks: (can be found at the College bookstore or new or used online such as amazon.com, etc.)



Classroom Policies:
Cell phones and music device must be turned silent for the entire class period.
Children may not be present in the classroom during class.
Homework is due at the end of class.

Attendance policy: READ CAREFULLY!!!








I will check on attendance during each class session.
Arriving 30 minutes late for class without proper justification will be counted as an hour absence.
You will be dropped from the class after 6 unjustified missed hours (3 classes of 2 hours).
You must come to class prepared with your homework completed and participate in order to succeed in
FRENCH B2. You will be graded on participation too.
If you miss the first day of class, you will be dropped from the course unless you provide proper information
to your instructor prior to the class start date.
Any work due during your absence is your responsibility. Always inform your instructor by e-mail about
any delay as soon as you get the opportunity.
You may not make up a missed test during class time. Discuss with your instructor the possibility of a
make-up test at the next class. If you do not ask for a make-up test yourself at the next class, you will get a
zero grade if you do not have justification.
Send an e-mail to your instructor when you miss a class to let him know!
Assignments and tests:
You will have regular tests and quizzes on the materials from the textbooks and classes.
Your final exam will be held during the final exam week. You may find out your final grade on-line just a few
days after your final. Please make any holiday travel arrangements accordingly.
Participation: (20%)
 A lot of the class time will be dedicated to communication and discussion. Express your ideas based on
determined topics and activities and ask questions. It includes attendance.
 Make a simple presentation in French using PowerPoint
Quizzes: (20%) (9 total) (15 minutes)
 To verify proper acquisition of grammar points covered the previous week before major tests.
Home assignments: (20%)
 Graded homework (5 groups of 3 assignments for a total of 15 assignments)
Tests: (40%) (Final: 20%, 4 tests at 5% each: total 20%)
 One per unit or so (with cumulative knowledge testing) to control broader grammar / writing / listening skill
acquisitions (60 minutes)

 90% and above

 80-89%

 70-79%
C
 60-69%
D (barely passing grade)
 59% and below

WARNING: THIS IS A FAIRLY INTENSIVE LANGUAGE COURSE (4 credits).
YOU CAN COMFORTABLY GO THROUGH A SEMESTER OF A LANGUAGE COURSE AND GET
THE MOST OUT OF IT ONLY IF YOU COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS, READ ALL REQUIRED
MATERIAL, WRITE AND LISTEN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.
4 HOURS OF CLASS TIME PER WEEK WILL REQUIRE A MINIMUM OF 8 MORE HOURS
OUTSIDE THE CLASS. YOU NEED TO BE AVAILABLE.
