STIMULUS FUNDS SUPPORT LOCAL ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE IN YUKON
Funding will create jobs, boost local economy
Whitehorse, Yukon, February 4, 2010 – The Honourable Senator Daniel Lang and the
Honourable Archie Lang, Yukon Minister of Highways and Public Works, Community
Services, and Energy, Mines and Resources, today announced joint funding of $600,000
for local road infrastructure improvements in the territory.
“Our government has created an Economic Action Plan that is stimulating our economy
and creating jobs to support Canadian families,” said Senator Lang. “We are working
well with our provincial, territorial and municipal colleagues to tender contracts in time
for the next construction season. At the same time, we are planning for deficit reduction
once the economy has recovered, and we are building a strong foundation for job creation
and economic growth.”
“Investing in Infrastructure is a key priority for Yukon government,” said Minister Lang.
“This funding partnership will provide new opportunities for Yukon citizens while
enhancing the quality of life and safety for the residents living along these roads.”
Funding will support repairs and upgrades to three roadways in the territory – Annie Lake
Road, Fish Lake Road and Jackson Lake Road. The projects will upgrade existing road
infrastructure to meet a safer and maintainable standard which will enhance economic life
in the region.
Improvements to Annie Lake Road will benefit many residents who access their
properties from the roadway. Upgrades will also benefit mining activity beyond the
highway and will provide improved access to the Mount Lorne Hamlet Community
centre situated on Annie Lake Road.
The Fish Lake and Jackson Lake Road project will improve access to residents as well as
improve access to the hinterland, which attracts many residents and tourists seeking
opportunities to hike, canoe, kayak, and fish.
Canada is contributing a total of $300,000 to support these projects, with a matching
contribution from the Yukon.
Federal financial support comes from the $4-billion, Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which
provides funding to provincial, territorial, municipal and community construction-ready
infrastructure projects that can be completed by March 31, 2011.
To date, the governments of Canada and Yukon have committed nearly $7.6 million
under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund for 12 additional projects in the Territory
including upgrades to the Guild Hall Theatre in Whitehorse, rehabilitation to Deadman
Creek, Albert Creek and Nordenskiold Bridges, and upgrades to the Top of the World
Highway.
Canada and the Yukon are working together to create jobs and boost the economy, while
making significant investments that help communities improve their infrastructure. Both
governments have agreed to work together to ensure that these funds are delivered
quickly and efficiently so that construction can begin as soon as possible.

LES FONDS DE STIMULATION SOUTIENNENT L’INFRASTRUCTURE
ROUTIÈRE LOCALE AU YUKON
Le financement permettra de créer des emplois et de stimuler l'économie locale
Whitehorse (Yukon), le 4 février 2010 – L’honorable sénateur Daniel Lang,
accompagné de l’honorable Archie Lang, ministre territorial de la Voirie et des Travaux
publics, des Services communautaires et de l’Énergie, des Mines et des Ressources, ont
annoncé aujourd’hui un financement conjoint de 600 000 dollars destiné à l’amélioration
de l’infrastructure routière locale dans le territoire.
« Notre gouvernement a mis au point le Plan d’action économique qui stimule notre
économie et crée des emplois pour soutenir les familles canadiennes, a dit le sénateur
Lang. Nous collaborons avec nos collègues provinciaux, territoriaux et municipaux afin
d’accorder les contrats à temps pour la prochaine saison de construction. Parallèlement,
nous nous préparons à réduire le déficit une fois l’économie relancée ainsi qu’à établir
des bases solides pour la création d’emplois et la croissance économique. »
« Les investissements dans les infrastructures constituent une priorité pour le
gouvernement du Yukon, a affirmé le ministre Lang. Ce partenariat de financement
créera de nouveaux débouchés pour les citoyens du Yukon tout en améliorant la qualité
de vie et la sécurité des résidents qui vivent le long de ces routes. »
Le financement servira à la réparation et à l’amélioration de trois routes dans le territoire,
soit les chemins Annie Lake, Fish Lake et Jackson Lake. Les projets permettront
d’améliorer l’infrastructure routière existante afin d’atteindre des normes plus sécuritaires
et stables qui favoriseront la vie économique dans la région.
Les améliorations prévues pour le chemin Annie Lake profiteront à de nombreux
résidents qui accèdent à leur propriété par cette voie. Les améliorations seront en outre
avantageuses pour l’exploitation minière qui se trouve à proximité de la route et
faciliteront l’accès au centre communautaire du hameau, situé sur le chemin Annie Lake.
Le projet visant les chemins Fish Lake et Jackson Lake simplifiera l’accès des résidents
et permettra de se rendre plus facilement dans l’arrière-pays, qui attire nombre de
résidents et de touristes adeptes de la randonnée pédestre, du canoë, du kayak ou de la
pêche.
Afin de soutenir ces projets, le Canada consent une contribution totale de 300 000 dollars,
à laquelle s’ajoute une contribution équivalente du Yukon.
Le soutien financier fédéral provient du Fonds de stimulation de l’infrastructure de
4 milliards de dollars, lequel permet de financer des projets d’infrastructure provinciaux,
territoriaux, municipaux et communautaires qui sont prêts à être mis en chantier et qui
seront terminés d’ici le 31 mars 2011.
Jusqu’à présent, les gouvernements du Canada et du Yukon ont engagé près de
7,6 millions de dollars dans le cadre du Fonds de stimulation de l’infrastructure pour
l’exécution de 12 projets supplémentaires dans le territoire, y compris l’amélioration du
théâtre Guild Hall à Whitehorse, la remise en état du pont du ruisseau Deadman, du pont
du ruisseau Albert et du pont Nordenskiold, ainsi que la modernisation de l’autoroute Top
of the World.
Le Canada et le Yukon travaillent ensemble pour créer des emplois et stimuler
l’économie, tout en faisant des investissements importants qui aident les collectivités à
améliorer leurs infrastructures. Les deux gouvernements ont accepté de collaborer afin de
s’assurer que les fonds sont versés rapidement et efficacement pour que la construction
commence le plus tôt possible.
