We would like to announce the incoming executive for 2006-2008/ Nous avons le plaisir
d’annoncer la composition du comité exécutif pour 2006-2008.
En l’absence d’autres candidatures, Francine Saillant est élue vice-présidente et Daphne
Winland est élue au poste demembre individuel (anglophone) par acclamation. De plus,
Lisa Mitchell remplacera Andrea Walsh comme trésorière de l’organisme. Les
biographies des candidats se trouvent ci-dessous.
Le comité exécutif de la CASCA remercie Andrea Walsh pour son travail acharné et lui
souhaite la meilleure des chances.
In the absence of other candidates for the positions, the following candidates won by
acclamation. Francine Saillant is the President elect, and Daphne Winland is the
Anglophone Member-at-Large. In addition, Lisa Mitchell will be the treasurer, replacing
Andrea Walsh, who is stepping down. Their biographies are given below.
The CASCA executive thanks Andrea Walsh for all of her hard work, and extends her
our best wishes.
1. Francine Saillant (vice-président)
Mes domaines de spécialisation sont l'anthropologie de la santé, du corps
et des soins, l'anthropologie des genres, l'anthropologie des mondes
contemporains et l'anthropologie de l'humanitaire. Je poursuis des travaux
au Québec, au Brésil et en France. Je dirige une équipe de recherche
composée de six chercheurs et regroupant une vingtaine d'étudiants, le
TIERCES (Groupe de recherches transdisciplinaires sur les identités, la
responsabilité sociale, les communautés et la santé), une équipe associée
au Centre interuniversitaire d'études sur les lettres, les arts et les
traditions (CELAT). Je dirige aussi la revue Anthropologie et Sociétés.
My areas of specialization are the anthropology of health, the body and
care; the anthropology of gender; the anthropology of contemporary societies
and the anthropology of the humanitarian. I am pursuing research in Quebec,
Brazil and France and I am directing a research team comprised of six
researchers and over 20 students. This team, the TIERCES or the
Interdisciplinary Research Group on Identities, Social Responsibility,
Communities and Health is associated with the CELAT or the Interuniversity
Center for Research in Literature, Arts and Traditions. I am also the
director of the journal Anthropologie et Sociétés.
2. Daphne Winland (Anglophone member-at-large)
Daphne Winland is Associate Professor of Anthropology at York University. Her
research reflects broadly focused interests in nationalism, diaspora and the cultural
politics of representation, transnationalism, memory and discourse analysis. Her current
research investigates contemporary Croatian struggles to reinvent themselves in the
changing political, social and cultural landscape of post-communist Eastern Europe. She
has published articles and book chapters on Mennonites, Hmong refugees and, most
recently, on transnational politics amongst diaspora and homeland Croats. These appear
in Ethnopolitics, Diaspora, American Ethnologist, Canadian Review of Sociology and
Anthropology and Journal of Historical Sociology. The results of her Croatian research
are also contained in her forthcoming book, The Politics of Desire and Disdain: Croats
between ‘home’ and ‘homeland’.
Daphne Winland travaille comme professeure agrégée au sein du département
d’Anthropologie de l’Université York. Ses recherches traduisent un intérêt marqué pour
le nationalisme, les diasporas et les politiques culturelles de représentation, le
transnationalisme, la mémoire et l’analyse du discours. Ses plus récents travaux portent
sur les luttes contemporaines des Croates, qui doivent se renégocier une identité dans le
cadre politique, social et culturel en constante mutation de l’Europe de l’Est
postcommuniste. Elle a publié des articles et des chapitres dans des ouvrages collectifs
sur les Mennonites, les réfugiés Hmong et, plus récemment, sur les politiques
transnationales régissant les relations entre la diaspora croate et les Croates résidant en
Croatie. On retrouve ses articles dans les revues Ethnopolitics, Diaspora, American
Ethnologist, Revue canadienne de sociologie et d'anthropologie et Journal of Historical
Sociology. Les résultats de ses recherches sur les Croates seront également publiés sous
peu dans un livre intitulé : The Politics of Desire and Disdain : Croats between ‘home’
and ‘homeland’.
3. Lisa Mitchell (Treasurer)
Lisa M. Mitchell is Assistant Professor in the Dept of Anthropology at the University of
Victoria. One area of her research addresses the meanings and practices of body, health,
and environment among children and youth in an impoverished urban neighbourhood in
the Philippines. Her second major area of research concerns reproductive health,
especially pregnancy, prenatal testing, perinatal loss and reproductive politics in Canada
and the United States. She is the author of Baby’s First Picture: Ultrasound and the
Politics of Fetal Subjects (University of Toronto Press, 2001).
Lisa M. Mitchell travaille comme professeure adjointe au département d’Anthropologie
de l’Université de Victoria. Ses travaux de recherche abordent notamment les sens et
pratiques corporelles, sanitaires et environnementales d’enfants et de jeunes vivant dans
un quartier urbain défavorisé des Philippines. Elle s’intéresse également à la santé
génésique, particulièrement à la grossesse, au dépistage anténatal, à la mort périnatale et
aux politiques canadienne et américaine en matière de reproduction. Elle est l’auteure de
Baby’s First Picture: Ultrasound and the Politics of Fetal Subjects (University of
Toronto Press, 2001).
